This means bail conditions no longer apply and they can now all attend demos again. A good week for stitchups falling apart.

At least 60 schoolgirls were groomed for sex by workers at seedy takeaways linked to the murder of a 14-year-old girl.

Children as young as 11 were targeted by mainly Asian staff at fast food outlets in Blackpool. They were offered food, alcohol and cigarettes in return for sexual favours.

An unpublicised police report produced after 14-year-old Charlene Downes vanished in 2003 found the girls, most if not all white, had been victims of the ‘honey pot’ premises. There were claims last night that the report was suppressed for reasons of political correctness.

Four years later another girl, 15-year-old Paige Chivers, also went missing. Detectives believe she was killed like Charlene, whose body has never been found.

Two Middle Eastern restaurant owners were acquitted over Charlene’s murder in 2007 and the crime remains unsolved.

The pair still run a kebab shop in Blackpool which was also linked to Paige, and she too was identified as a victim of sexual exploitation. Last year police reported that the takeaway was attracting young girls who were being supplied with alcohol and cocaine.

The revelations about the scale of grooming centred around the downmarket cafes comes amid growing concern at disturbing cases involving mainly Asian gangs exploiting young white girls for sex in the Midlands and North of England.

The girls, often from vulnerable homes or in the care system, were befriended by men who showered them with gifts and affection before using them for sex.

Former Home Secretary Jack Straw has said the girls were seen as ‘easy meat’, while David Cameron called on police to follow criminal acts ‘without fear or favour’ wherever the evidence leads.

The Home Office commissioned a nationwide investigation into the problem, which has long been considered taboo by police officers fearful of being branded racist.

Indeed, a former senior detective at Lancashire Police yesterday blamed political correctness for its failure to highlight its 2003 findings in Blackpool.

But the force denied this, saying the report had been available online since 2007 but had never been intended for publication.

Senior officers insisted an intensive programme to break the cycle of exploitation had been a success and that in the last six months 50 of 54 grooming suspects were white.

Shocking claims made in court over Charlene’s murder revealed fears that her body had been put through a mincing machine, with takeaway staff said to have joked that her remains had ‘gone into the kebabs’.

A jury failed to reach a verdict on charges that Jordanian immigrant Iyad Albattikhi had murdered her while his Iranian landlord Mohammed Reveshi had disposed of her body.

A retrial collapsed in 2008 amid failings in the police investigation and the men were paid almost £250,000 each in compensation.

The kebab shop run by Mr Albattikhi and Mr Reveshi has changed its name from Funny Boyz to Mr Beanz. It was refused a hot food licence  last year amid fears about ‘sexual activity’ linked to the premises, but the pair blame a ‘police vendetta’ and have appealed.

Following Charlene’s disappearance in 2003, police found more than 60 girls were being groomed for sex by non-white men centred around 11 Blackpool takeaways.

They were mainly aged between 13 and 15, but some were as young as 11. Yesterday former Detective Superintendent Mick Gradwell warned that research into the problem was being hampered by ‘political correctness and concerns about upsetting community cohesion’.

But Lancashire police denied a cover-up. Assistant Chief Constable Andy Rhodes said his officers were making significant progress in tackling child sex exploitation across Lancashire, regardless of the background of the culprits.

He added: ‘We recognise that in some areas the number of Asian offenders is disproportionate to the population and far from ignoring this, have been tackling the issue head on by working with the local communities, giving presentations to community forums and visiting mosques to raise awareness.’

It was reported yesterday that while most British sex offenders are lone white men, details of court cases in 13 towns showed that out of 56 men convicted of multiple offences of grooming girls for sex, 50 were Muslim, mostly of Pakistani heritage.

Flintshire teenagers remanded in custody on riot incitement charges

TWO Caergwrle teenagers accused of encouraging a riot through Facebook have been remanded in custody by a Crown Court judge.

Thomas Hughes, 19, of Hawarden Road, and Jack Johnston Lewis, 18, of High Street, were charged after alleged comments posted on the social networking site involving the nearby town of Wrexham.

At a preliminary hearing at Caernarfon Crown Court today (Friday), Judge Merfyn Hughes QC remanded the pair in custody.

Defence lawyers applied for their bail, granted by magistrates at a previous hearing, to be renewed.

Brian Jackson, defending Lewis, described the case against him as ‘weak’. He added: “This was a gross overreaction by the police.”

The pair are due to appear next in October.

Since the attacks, campaigners have called for the EDL to be formally classified by the government as a far-right organisation, rather than a legitimate political entity. Nick Lowles, director of anti-extremist campaign group Hope Not Hate, said yesterday that the decision not to classify the EDL as an extremist right-wing group “severely limits the capacity of the police to gather intelligence on the EDL, its members and its activities”. “Given the mounting evidence of connections between the EDL and alleged violent extremists like Anders Behring Breivik, we don’t see how this situation is sustainable,” he said.

Two Britons suspected of planning attack on British troops arrested in Afghanistan

British armed forces have arrested two Britons in Afghanistan suspected of fighting for the Taliban.

The pair were held at a hotel in the western city of Herat in a joint raid with Afghan intelligence service the National Directorate of Security.

They were feared to have been planning an attack on British troops in the country.

The suspects, who are British passport-holders with dual nationality, are now being held by British troops in Helmand Province, according to The Times.

An unnamed senior Afghan official told the newspaper: 'It was terrorism-related. It was a UK-led operation.'

The Ministry of Defence confirmed that two people claiming to be British nationals had been detained.

A spokesman said: 'We can confirm that British forces have detained two individuals in Afghanistan who claim to be British nationals.

'We are not prepared to comment further at this stage.'

A Foreign Office spokesman said: 'We can confirm that two British nationals have been detained in Afghanistan.

'Embassy staff are providing assistance.'

Nato forces in Afghanistan normally hold suspects for a maximum of four days before releasing them or handing them over to Afghan authorities.

The Foreign Office spokesman added: 'The UK has a national policy of detaining beyond 96 hours in exceptional circumstances, in particular where it could provide information that could help protect our forces or the local population.'

It comes as British troops handed responsibility for security in the capital of war-torn Helmand province - Lashkar Gah - over to Afghan forces yesterday.

CITY leaders have condemned English Defence League protesters who marched through Portsmouth – telling them: ‘Don’t come back’.

The clear message came after hundreds of EDL members snaked through the city centre on Saturday as part of a planned protest.

Organisers had promised a peaceful event and deny their campaign has racist undertones.

But there were ugly scenes at times as the event threatened to spill over into violence.

At the very start of the march police had to stand firm to stop EDL members surging forward before the official start time.

Some of the group of around 500 marchers were heard spouting vile racist abuse and making insulting references to Allah.

At one point some of the marchers paused to jeer at an Asian family who had stepped onto their balcony to see the parade pass by.

Some EDL members made a beeline for a scaffolding van in a bid to grab poles, but were thwarted by police.

And at the end of the event police averted a potential clash as marchers tried to get into Guildhall Square where anti-fascist protesters had gathered for their own rally in defence of multiculturalism.

Dozens of officers including mounted police who had been drafted in from Thames Valley managed to keep the two groups apart.

Saturday saw seven arrests of EDL supporters on suspicion of crimes ranging from public order offences to assaulting a police officer. Two ‘counter protesters’ who were among 150 people taking part in the demonstration in Guildhall Square were also arrested but released without charge at the scene, Hampshire Constabulary said.

EDL marchers travelled from all over the country to take part in the march, the first of its kind in Hampshire. Supporters came from divisions including those in West Yorkshire, Berkshire, London, Plymouth, Essex, Brighton and Colchester. Hampshire police mounted a huge operation involving around 400 officers after similar events elsewhere in the country had sparked trouble.

After the march, MP Mike Hancock said he did not ever want to see the group in Portsmouth again.

‘‘I don’t want to see them here at all,’ said the Liberal Democrat MP for Portsmouth South. ‘I would much prefer if they came nowhere near us. But sadly they have persisted in doing it. I think they are pointless.

‘I hope they will now leave Portsmouth and not come back. What I don’t get is how people want to come all the way from Plymouth to demonstrate on the streets of Portsmouth. It must have been five or six to one people from outside the city. ‘

Mr Hancock praised the actions of the police officers who managed to contain the protest and stop EDL demonstrators clashing with the group in Guildhall Square.

He said: ‘I can’t speak highly enough of the planning. I think it’s a splendid achievement by the police. I can’t praise the police enough for what they have done.’

His views were echoed by city council leader Gerald Vernon-Jackson, who was in the city centre on Saturday as he watched the protest unfold.

He said: ‘We don’t want it here. I wish they would leave Portsmouth alone.

‘On the whole people get on well between communities. They all mix up pretty well.

‘In lots of other cities there are areas where different communities live. We have a well-integrated city and that’s how we should remain.’

Terry Hall, a councillor for Eastney, who was part of the counter protest, said: ‘They have a right to protest but I don’t want them in my city.

‘They don’t represent most of the people in the city. I don’t want them here.’

People in Portsmouth’s Muslim community had largely ignored the protest, with many saying they would be staying away from the city centre and praying instead.

Abulkasim Suyeb, 42, who lives in North End, was in the city centre as the protest took place.

He said: ‘I am a Muslim but I am also a citizen of Portsmouth.

‘We are against extremists and we are peace-loving people.’

The amount of idiots on Facebook talking shit is out of this world. Large numbers of clowns regularly threaten violence, use extreme racism etc and claim to be EDL. The majority of them weve never heard of or met at demos. I suspect loads of them are fake profiles, a lot more are genuinely thick morons. When two EDL members were served a ten year ASBO the police produced two ring binders with every word they had ever typed on Facebook as grounds for serving it on them. You people are fools and deserve no sympathy when you get arrested and banged up for two years for your stupidity. Weve got our top 500 people away from Facebook and we know they can all behave themselves at a demo. Thats all we need. EDL Demo Against Shotton Mosque

On Saturday 22nd January, the English Defence League (EDL) held a protest in Shotton over plans to build an Islamic centre in the town. Members of the EDL’s divisions from Stoke, Burnley, Manchester, Cardiff, Liverpool and Chester had all been invited to the official protest at the old Shotton Lane Social Club, where the proposed centre would be built. A spokesman for the Chester division of the EDL said the group had been liaising with North Wales Police and the aim was to make ‘a peaceful protest’. EDL members gathered at Chester train station from noon-12.30pm before heading by train to Shotton. From there, the protestors headed to The Central Hotel for a demonstration. The Flintshire Muslim Cultural Society (FMCS) is aiming to set up the Islamic centre at the former Shotton Lane club, which has been empty since it closed in August. The group is more than halfway to raising the £150,000 needed to buy the venue after a TV appeal broadcast to the wider Muslim community. The Flintshire Muslim Cultural society currently rents the Queensferry Institute building for Islamic and Arabic classes, which are held twice  a week. FMCS chairman Monchab Ali said the reason for the new base was because of growing class sizes. At 1.45pm the protestors left the central hotel and began their march to the former Shotton Lane Social Club, the location of the proposed Mosque.

ABOUT 100 members of far-right group the English Defence League descended on Shotton to protest against plans for a new Islamic cultural centre in the town.

Dozens of North Wales Police officers were out in force on Saturday (January 22) to ensure the protest passed peacefully.

EDL campaigners marched through the town centre to the site of the former Shotton Lane Social Club, where the proposed centre would be built if the Flintshire Muslim Cultural Society successfully raises the £150,000 needed to buy the venue.

Superintendent Dave Owens, the senior officer at the parade, said the parade passed without incident.

He said: “Our intention was to facilitate a peaceful protest and we were helped in achieving this by the organisers who discussed their plans with us before the event and were fully co-operative throughout.”

Supt Owens said the Deeside neighbourhood police team, led by Sergeant Tony Heaword, will continue to work with community leaders to address any ongoing concerns in relation to the development in Shotton.

Campaign group Unite Against Fascism had strongly criticised the protest.

National officer Martin Smith said: “The UAF deplores the EDL’s protest against building a cultural centre.

“Instead of spreading lies and hate against the Muslim community in Britain, we believe we should be able to celebrate anybody’s culture and live a life free of hate and bigotry.”

We’ll never know what sparked club blaze

FIRE investigators say they will never know what sparked the blaze which destroyed a former social club. 

It has been six months since Shotton Lane Social Club was gutted in a suspected arson attack, but detectives say damage to the building was so great they have been unable to pinpoint a cause. 

The disused club was earmarked for an Islamic Cultural Centre by the Flintshire Muslim Cultural Society (FMCS) who made a television appeal on Sky Channel S in a bid to raise funds for the project.

Chairman Dr Ahmad Faraz Bhatti says he is confident the FMCS will establish a centre in Flintshire.

He told the Leader: “We just want to be part of society like anyone else and exercise our rights to integrate and educate our children.

“It hasn’t shocked us from our aims. I believe we are doing the right thing.”

More than 100 people were evacuated from their homes as firefighters spent six hours tackling the blaze on February 4.

The club, which closed its doors last August, was later demolished.

The FMCS, which boasts 100 members, meets twice a week at the War Memorial Hall in Queensferry but needs a larger, permanent facility to worship.

Dr Faraz says the new centre will also provide regular Islamic learning for children and facilities for female members.

“If we have got a permanent base we would have more sports activities for the children, like table tennis,” he said.

“Some children don’t have the chance to participate in sport, especially girls, so we want to provide them with that in a comfortable environment.

“We want to get people more educated about the Islamic community and we want to be part of the community.”

Dr Faraz said there was a lot to consider in the search for a new premises.

“A lot of members walk to the centre so we don’t want somewhere that is too far 
away,” he said.

“So far we haven’t come across a place that is big enough but we are keeping our options open.”

Dr Faraz, a plastic surgeon at The Countess of Chester Hospital, has taken the role of chairman from predecessor Mohammed Munchab Ali, who owns the Bengal Dynasty restaurant in Shotton.

He offered his thanks to the community who have offered support following the fire.

“We have had a tremendous amount of support from the police and council and society members,” he added.

Plans to transform the disused club provoked strong protests from the right-wing group the English Defence League.

More than 100 members marched through Shotton to the site of the club in January and May.

A spokesman for North Wales Fire and Rescue said: “The fire was started by suspected arson but the extent of damage to the premises means that we will never be able to confirm that for sure.”
